The Problem
Good feedback is specific, but writing specific feedback for every paper takes hours. Standard canned comments save time, but they sound generic and still require tedious editing. Additionally, grading fatigue often causes teachers to grade harder at the top of the stack than at the bottom.
The Idea
Gemini Notebook loaded with the assignment and rubric becomes a second reader. It drafts a score and specific feedback for each paper. The teacher reads every paper, corrects the draft, and feeds the correction back so the notebook learns the teacher's standard. This is not upload-and-grade. The teacher reads every paper and makes every final decision.
The Steps
Step 1. Set up one notebook per assignment. Upload the assignment, the writing guide, any reference materials, the rubric (screenshots are fine), and a short note on how you score.
Step 2. Copy one student's response from your learning management system and paste only the text. Never include a name.
Step 3. Ask: "Score this with the rubric. Explain what meets and misses each criterion, then draft feedback for the student."
Step 4. Read the student's paper yourself, then compare it to the notebook's report.
Step 5. Correct anything you disagree with. For example: "That detail isn't on the rubric; it shouldn't cost points."
Step 6. Calibrate it. Paste "Here's the score and feedback I gave. Use it for the next one" in the notebook chat.
Step 7. Repeat for each paper. Edit the feedback so it sounds like you, then post the score and feedback.
