Keeping Classroom Quizzes Fresh with Gemini Notebook

Upload one chapter and generate a quiz drawn only from it, with every question cited to its passage, so assessments keep up with new textbook editions.

The Problem

When a new textbook edition arrives or a unit changes, existing quizzes often no longer match the updated material. Rewriting assessments entirely from scratch requires time that busy teachers simply do not have.

The Idea

Gemini Notebook operates strictly using the specific sources provided to it. By uploading a single chapter, every quiz question generated is drawn directly from that chapter and includes a citation linking to the exact passage from which it came.

The Steps

Step 1. Scan the chapter: Photograph or scan the required chapter pages and combine them into a single PDF file.

Step 2. Create the notebook: Open a new notebook and upload the chapter PDF as its only source.

Step 3. Generate the quiz: In the Studio panel, generate a quiz (and add flashcards or a study guide if helpful for student practice).

Step 4. Review and edit: Cross-check every question against its citation, rewording unclear phrasing and removing weak items.

Step 5. Store and reuse: Keep the notebook saved so you can swap in a new chapter and regenerate assessments whenever textbook editions are updated.

Four rules for Teachers

Rule 1. Verify every citation: Always check each generated question against its cited text passage before giving the assessment to students.

Rule 2. Refine and prune: Reword any unclear questions and trim weak ones to ensure assessment quality.

Rule 3. Respect material ownership: Only use chapters from educational materials that your school legitimately owns.

Rule 4. Save for future edits: Retain your notebook so that when textbook editions change down the line, you can easily swap in the updated chapter and regenerate.

Try it this week

Select one chapter from your current curriculum, photograph or scan the pages into a single PDF, and upload it as the sole source in a new notebook. Within a single planning period, you can generate a grounded draft quiz, adjust phrasing, and have a fully aligned assessment ready for your class.
